Metal Therapy
In the early 90's, before I moved to Maryland for college, I started to get into metal - heavy metal, that is. The local college radio stations around Albany, from RPI and SUNY Albany, played lots of good hip-hop and metal, and it was primarily through these shows that I found new music.
In 1995 I came across a local band called Cutthroat when I heard one of their songs played on WRPI. It was my first contact with "hardcore", a style of metal that typically emphasizes short, brutal guitar riffs over solos, quick (three minutes or less) songs over long, drawn-out, tempo-changing opuses, and pretty consistent lyrical content - anger. Cutthroat was signed to Ruffneck Records, an independent label based out of Clifton Park. One day I went down to a music store deep in Albany and found their first CD called Hatebreedsrage. It was the first non-hip-hop album I'd bought in probably five years, and I loved every second of it: it was creative, fresh, catchy, and just downright brutal. You could sing, err, scream and growl along with the choruses and you felt like you could smash your way through a brick wall.
For years afterward, as my metal album collection grew, I'd periodically try to find out whatever happened to Cutthroat. I'm still searching; it seems like a few years later they just sort of disappeared. Apparently they put out two more albums, one in 1998 and another in 2000, but I've never been able to find them anywhere, nor find out what became of the band itself.
I pulled the album out last night and again, I'm just loving it. It's still one of my favorite metal albums of all time. Metal for me is intensely therapeutic - a better term might be calming though, as it serves to diffuse my pent-up frustration, rather than do anything to actually remove the source. I crank up the volume, bang my head a bit, sometimes try (mostly pathetically poorly) to yell along, get myself into a semi-hyper invincibility mood, look around for somebody to rip to shreds, and by the end of the album I feel better.
It's probably not the heathiest way to deal with anger and frustration, but certainly there are unhealthier ways, and what the hell, it works for me.

Actually, I think it is THE healthiest way to deal with frustration.
I meant to contrast it with actual constructive introspection, or something similarly lofty. In other words finding a way to break out of the cycle of being continually frustrated.
So in lieu of that, blasting metal does it for me.
Hadn't thought of that before, but I just checked and they're not there.
hey i played bass in this band. great to hear you still enjoy the tunes. we also released a free demo under the name the deadEFFECT a couple years ago. i have those 6 songs and our other stuff i could provide to you. just reformated my hd so i still have to get all my music back on my system but when i do i'll zip it all and post a link.

Aw man, I didn't even notice Bryan's comment until he e-mailed me recently. Thanks a lot, man! I've been looking for tracks from the second album for TEN YEARS! I just listened to all the 'new' material and I love it, really good stuff.
Thanks again Bryan, it was great to hear from you. I still can't believe you even stumbled across my blog.
yeah a couple friends and i use blogger.com to find music downloads. someone searched cutthroat and found your entry. it was forwarded to me and the rest is history.
glad you are enjoying the tunes, talk to you soon.
Cutthroat and Deadeffect were both fuckin' excellent. That song "Driving" remains one of the greatest songs I've ever heard to this day. If anyone can hit me up with Bryan's email address and/or a new download link (I think I already have all the songs, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, ha) please do so at:

Thanks!
I can't believe I found someone else who know's about cutthroat. Hatebreedsrage is one of my favorite albums of all time. I lost it about seven years ago when I traded in my car. I've never been the same since. What are the odds that one of the band members would be how you found it. I actually went to one of their shows in Albany just before I lost the album. All the bands from that area are incredible, they call it "Troycore". They played alongside Madball, Dying Breed and many more. The bassist who shared his info with you was a pleasure to watch, he was all over the stage. I remember the first thing he did was grab the mic stand and throw it off the stage as to get it out of his way. Anyways I was hoping you might be willing to pass on the favor. That album is sure to go straight into my cd player and probably wouldn't ever come out unless getting transferred to my car. I'll be eagerly waiting to hear from you.
Thanks.
tim1684,
Glad to see another fan stumbling across my post. Send me your e-mail address and I'll help you out.

please someone tell me you have a copy of hatebreedsrage. e and my wif have been trying to finds this for 6-7 years now since our copy got trashed
Yo guys!!! I'm a HUGE Cutthroat fan.
The album "Hatebreedsrage" is sick. Actually my photo is on the inside of the cover. They shot the photos at a "CUTTHROAT" show at "Bogies" in Albany. Man I miss the whole scene so much. I'd like to get a copy of the zip with all the old CUTTHROAT tunes. I had one of the first tapes that they put out with pic of a deformed face after it was taking a punch it appears. That tape had "Keeplock" and a few others that showed up on "Hatebreedsrage". If the bassist or anyone else who has that Zip file is still activly using these boards, can you email me so that I can get a copy of that zip file. I'd love to find some more Cutthroat music. Funny thing is. I just found a second copy of the "hatebreedsrage" cd taht I got the night of the release party at the Q. It was still unused. It was in an old backpack that I had put away. with the bassists permission I would make someone a copy if they wanted it.. but like I Said.... not without their actual permission. My email address is "JackG79@gmail.com" or you can find me at www.myspace.com/jackg79
Take care everyone!
